STATEMENT: SCS's Vote on Charter School Renewals
The following statement is issued by Dr. Maya Bugg, CEO, Tennessee Charter School Center, in reference to Shelby County School Boards vote regarding the renewal of three charter school contracts:
“Last night, the Shelby County School Board voted unanimously to keep the doors of three charter schools open: Memphis Business Academy Middle, Veritas College Preparatory and Memphis College Preparatory. We applaud the board for weighing district policy against the impact of the schools-- not just by their test scores, but also the impact the schools have on their communities. The board ultimately voted in favor of what is in the best interest of all 2800 students, their families, and communities.
These schools now have the opportunity to build upon the progress they've made thus far and can continue to work to achieve the highest academic standard for their students. We look forward to supporting them through this process and being an accountability partner alongside Shelby County Schools.”
